When you’re planning to play golf most us don’t have time to stretch or hit a bucket of balls beforehand. It’s a pivotal step in golf to do some form of stretching before every round, just watch the pros and you’ll see that they warm-up at least an hour before they tee off. This pre-round routine gives their bodies the best chance to perform and shoot low scores. Back in 2003 when I was preparing to compete in the New York State Open, before the round I decided that it would be a good idea to go to one of the stretching tables and get worked on by one of the personal trainers. This was the best thing I had done, my swing never felt so smooth. I believe that to play good golf you must warm-up properly. I started to follow the steps of 5 minutes to Tee-Time; the results were instant in sense that my body was not tight and I could really swing the club freely and without effort. I love the idea that in 5 minutes I could get physically ready to play golf, my body just felt relax and most important my range of motion was tremendous. If anyone wants to increase their chance of lowering their scores I highly recommend 5 minutes to Tee-Time. Remember golf is a game of range of motion and most amateurs lack in that department. Just try it once and I guarantee you that you will feel better and hopefully shooting lower scores.

Most of us don’t play golf as often as we want. When we do play in that business event or charity outing, we may be able to drive the ball OK and even hit some decent iron shots that get us near the green. From that position near the green, we have the potential to make a good score on the hole or really mess up and take several more strokes t get the ball in the hole.

In simple terms, some of the most important shots are in the short game area, from 100 yards out and into the hole. The following are techniques you can practice to help you score better and keep away from those nasty double and triple bogeys.

From just off the fringe, with little green to work with, take your sand wedge. Open the club face and your stance slightly and play the ball forward in your stance, it’s almost like playing a bunker shot. Lean your weight forward and swing the club back and through along your stance line. This stance and swing will result in a shot that lands on the green with some loft and might spin more or less depending on what type of ball you’re playing. This shot will give you a chance to make the putt and keep your score on the hole no worse than a bogey. An important reminder is that I tell a student is that loft is your friend; you must use the loft of the club wisely.

Recreational golfers fear the bunker shot more than any other. Professional golfers, on the other hand, find the bunker shot to be one of the easiest. The bunker shot, executed correctly, is the only shot in golf where you don’t hit the ball. Instead you hit the sand behind it and the ball is carried out and onto the green on a splash of sand.

Here’s is a simple way to play the sand blast from a greenside bunker. First open the face of your sand wedge or lob wedge. Then take your stance in the sand, make sure to dig in your feet about an inch in the sand, this will help you with stabilizing your lower body. Your stance should be slightly left of the target (Flagstick) and your aim slightly right. Position the ball forward in your stance. You are now almost ready to swing. Aim at a spot in the sand an inch or two behind the ball- remember you want to hit the sand, not the ball. Now swing the club up steeply and swing down into the sand and through to a high finish. The big key here is that 99 percent of the time people don’t finish their swing, if you finish the swing most of the time you will get the ball out of the bunker and onto the green.

THE BUNKER SHOT, EXECUTED CORRECTLY, IS THE ONLY SHOT IN GOLF WHERE YOU DON’T HIT THE BALL.

Practicing your short game shots at a range or golf course will pay big dividends when you play. Remember that many of the strokes you lose are lost around the green. You’ll enjoy the game more when you get the ball in the hole on fewer strokes. Working on your short game and bunker play will help you accomplish that. Remember to practice the short game just as much time as you do on your other parts of the game.

I have been teaching this game for the past ten years, some of my clients are occasional golfers, meaning they play no more than 5 times a year. Even the ones who just recently have taken the game up come to me for lessons to help them prepare for the all so important company outing. My job as a PGA Teaching Professional is to give them the right tools needed for them to fit in these types of events. It takes years to perfect or even build a golf swing. I compare golf to playing the piano, Let me ask you a simple question? If you are learning how to play the piano and you did not know what it involves like reading the music to using the 80 different keys or so and I asked you to play a concert at Carnegie Hall in a couple of months would you be able to make a decent performance, The answer to this question would be almost impossible. The same goes for learning the game of golf.

The first thing I would start is by finding a PGA Professional for a series of lessons or by enrolling in a golf school/clinic. At the beginning it could be very frustrating because the amount of skill that you need to hit that little white ball with a club is hard. The club head is no bigger than the size of a business card. It’s up to your professional to encourage you and give you the right information in order for you to be well prepared to swing a golf club. You noticed that I did not say hit the ball only because there’s no hit in a golf swing it’s the club swinging around your body. Today most amateurs play golf to hit the ball; they don’t swing the club, that’s a big difference.

Lesson number one should concentrate on the basics, gripping the club, posture and alignment to the intended target. After you have accomplished this its time to go to the next step and start the club swinging, this is the part that takes the longest to learn. People learn at different levels so give your self plenty of time and do not get discouraged. My personal experience given thousands of lessons I would say I could take someone with no golfing background and give me 12 weeks with them 3 times a week and that would get them to play golf at a par-3 course maybe even nine holes. Back to getting ready, a few more steps follow like learning what’s the difference between a 9 iron or a 5 iron, how far do the different clubs hit the ball? How high? How many can I play with? How do I dress properly what kind of shoes do I wear? An important one is etiquette. You need some of these answers in order to play golf.

Now that you have taken lessons, practiced in between, maybe read a good instruction book. It’s time to get some equipment you’ll need golf balls, tees, glove and some golf clubs off course but not all 14 of them. I would recommend a 3 or 5 wood; some irons like a 5, 7, 9, pitching wedge, sand wedge and a putter. Please do not get your grandfathers or your fathers golf clubs from 1975 this will make your day miserable only because the equipment has changed so much in the past decade, go out and at least get yourself some modern technology that will make the ball go up in the air and hopefully straight again see a PGA professional for advise before buying any kind of golf equipment.

The day has arrived to tee it up, don’t be nervous remember it is just a game; the most important thing is to have fun and secondly make some business contacts. When it’s all said and done you should know whether you’ll do it again. If you decide to continue remember it’s a game you do not play golf for a living leave that to the professionals, to make you feel good even they will once in a while hit very poor shots they just don’t do it too often.
